Our society is becoming increasingly dependent on synthesized substances that threaten personal and environmental health. It is one thing to identify hazardous materials in the home and decide to stop using them. However, the need for which the use of those materials was intended still exists. The next step is to replace hazardous substances with non-hazardous ones. But how? This program provides answers. Another major exposure pathway is via food containing residues of pesticides. If you don’t grow your own food, what is one to do?
Project Goals and Objectives.
SDN proposes to follow the success of its program to collect and safely dispose of household hazardous materials in communities in the area with a campaign to promote the use of practical, safe alternatives. For example, relatively benign household products can substitute for harsh chemical cleansers and pesticides. An effective education campaign can encourage use of such substitutes as well as increase demand for organically grown produce. Use of safer materials will reduce exposure to hazardous substances on several fronts:
SDN will produce educational materials and use its established network in the area to distribute them as widely as possible. If adequate resources are secured, the materials will also be translated into Arabic and distributed among the Bedouin communities of the Negev
